Dr. Leah Boyer

Secondary Areas of Expertise Chemistry; plant biology; psychology; sociology; Biography Leah earned her B.S. in Biochemistry and her Ph.D. in Biomedical Science. Her research experience spans the globe, including at the Harvard Stem Cell Institute, Woods Hole Marine Biological Laboratory, and Max Plank Institute and involving a wide diversity of model organisms in vivo and countless cell lines in vitro. She has been awarded grants/fellowships from the National Institute of Health, California Institute of Regenerative Medicine, and private foundations. For her undergraduate thesis, Leah investigated tissue-specific heat shock protein expression during stress and, for her graduate thesis, Leah examined the immune system’s contribution to Parkinson’s disease and identified a novel anti-inflammatory, neuroprotective compound. Before starting her own stem cell consulting company in 2018, she spent two years as director of the Salk’s Institute’s Stem Cell Core Laboratory. She has been heavily involved in science writing for over a decade, co-authored 19 peer-reviewed publications, and enjoyed scientific editing professionally since 2017.
